This year’s Matariki Indigenous Student Mobility Programme successfully took place at Dartmouth College, 24th June – 8th July. This was the third year of an initial pilot scheme; which has been extended for a fourth year to take place at Queen’s in 2019. As a development to the original brief, this year’s programme specifically aimed to offer a more academic, research-focused programme of activities.
Participants in this year’s programme spent one week visiting and working with local indigenous communities, followed by one week exploring Indigenous Spirituality & Knowledge in the classroom and in research. Topics studied include Contemporary American Indian Politics and Indigenous Research Methodologies. There were student/faculty research workshops and Elders from Matariki partner institutions also discussed their institutional roles in the university as “experts” and facilitators of Indigenous Spirituality & Knowledge.
A mixture of around 19 indigenous- and non-indigenous students from 5 of the 7 Matariki partners participated.
